Becoming America explores the disconnect between the American Dream and the lived experience of many of our citizens and residents. We champion the idea that anyone can succeed if they work hard enough. America is a melting pot, a country of immigrants, and the land of the free. These ideals fall short for those who face racism, economic discrimination, violence, incarceration, and marginalization. This is often true for the entire course of a family's history in the United States. The oppression comes from public and private policies, organizations and individuals.

Becoming America consists of five works for viola, soprano, and piano trio. They were commissioned from composers of ethnic, racial or religious groups that continue to face injustices in today's American society. Their works draw from art song, opera, traditional songs, and jazz. They explore themes of immigration, assimilation, cultural beauty, personal relationships, uncomfortable history, and family. These pieces are deeply personal to each composer. While no individual can claim to fully represent their demographic, my goal is to continue a conversation about the ongoing prejudice faced by many in our community. I hope this will encourage us to live up to our ideals and be the America that inspires dreams for a better life.
